joanna campana

vocal coach

What is your favorite part of coaching at ROC Star Academy?

I just started in January 2024, but I have loved seeing kids of different ages having fun with their songs and growing as singers and performers.

Hometown: Penfield, NY

Your musical focus/instruments you play:

Vocal primary - but I also play guitar, piano, and ukulele!

What is your musical background?

In high school, I was involved in my school's musicals but really began singing through a program called Sing-Out. The program inspired me to further my education at Nazareth College as a Music Therapy Major. During my 4 years, I performed in choirs and studied as a vocal primary under some incredible voice teachers. I have been a Board Certified Music Therapist since 2020 and work as a full time music therapist with a variety of students K-12 supporting their non-musical goals (communication, socialization, motor, and cognitive skills). In addition to being a music therapist and vocal coach, I am also the vocal director for Sing-Out, a non-profit based here in East Rochester! Each year, I work together with amazing musicians, directors, and 8-12th grade students to put on an annual charity show to raise money for children’s charities in our area.

What are your musical influences/favorite bands?

Favorite of all time - Taylor Swift (Swiftie since 2006!). But really anything with a good beat works! My spotify is a very diverse mix ranging from musical theater to country and everything in between.

What one album would you choose if you were stranded on a deserted island?

"Speak Now" by Taylor Swift

What is your favorite venue or event that you’ve performed?

My experience through Sing-Out’s annual show - it got me to where I am today.

What’s the best piece of musical advice you’ve received in your career thus far?

My two favorites that apply to music and life:

  1. Fail forward.

  2. It’s Gotta Be Fun!
